New Research Project: Making Server Energy Efficiency Measurable

IDED is launching a research project on behalf of the Federal Environment Agency to further develop the Server Idle Energy Coefficient (SIEC) metric. The method will be tested in real data centers in collaboration with three partners.

Starting in July 2024, IDED will implement the research project "Further Development of the Server Idle Energy Coefficient (SIEC)" on behalf of the Federal Environment Agency, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The goal is to make unnecessary energy consumption of underutilized servers in data centers visible and measurable—where the existing metric PUE reaches its limits.

Three partners contribute their expertise: Data Center Excellence GmbH (dc-e) is responsible for the measurement methodology, the University of Paderborn provides its HPC laboratory environment for controlled testing, and X-Ion GmbH supplies real operating data as a cloud provider. Over 22 months, the consortium will analyze, validate, and test the SIEC metric on various server models and virtualization environments—with the aim of future standardization.
