Milestone: First end-to-end environmental impact assessment of a software application

IDED reached a milestone: the first complete measurement of the environmental impact of a server-side software application — including energy consumption, embedded CO₂, and real-time energy mix.

IDED (formerly known as SDIA) completed the first end-to-end environmental impact assessment of a server-side software application. The energy measurement relied on software-based methods (IPMI, Intel RAPL). Combined with Boavizta APIs for lifecycle assessment data and real-time electricity mix data from Electricity Maps, it created a complete chain: energy consumption, embedded carbon of the hardware, and CO₂ emissions based on the actual energy mix.

This milestone demonstrated that attributing environmental impact to individual software applications is technically feasible. The complete documentation is available as a publication.
