The EU is revising the Energy Efficiency Directive with new reporting obligations for data centers. IDED commented on the draft, calling for broader transparency that goes beyond mere energy efficiency.

As part of the Fit-for-55 package, the European Commission is developing new obligations for the energy performance and sustainability of data centers. IDED (then known as SDIA) submitted a detailed response to the technical support document, along with co-authors.

The response includes:

  • Definition and Classification: Guidelines for the delineation and categorization of data centers for reporting purposes.

  • Energy Consumption Measurement: Recommendations to ensure consistent and high-quality reporting of total energy consumption.

  • Advanced Metrics: Evaluation of the proposed metrics and indicators — advocating for moving beyond PUE and linking data centers with software applications.

  • Need for Out-of-the-Box Thinking: The initiative's goals are correct. However, to achieve a significant reduction in the energy footprint of the EU data center industry, genuine transparency concerning total power consumption must be established.
