Digital Resources

Digital resource primitives (’digital resources’) are defined as the low-level resources required for digital products & services to operate. They can be seen as the fuel that power digital software application. Digital resources are essential outputs of data centers: compute, storage, and transport/networking capacity; the ability to process, store and transport data.

For comparison, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology defines cryptographic primitives as:

A low-level cryptographic algorithm used as a basic building block for higher-level cryptographic algorithms.

Environmental Footprint

In the SDIA we focus on the environmental footprint of the digital industry as the term carbon footprint merely focuses on carbon exhaustion while this is not the only unsustainable effect of industry activities.
